The First Class of Asian studies with Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University(APU)

“Asian Studies” in the Justice and Business course is a class in collaboration with Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University(APU). The professor of the university visited our school and had a class for 2 hours. One or two weeks later we had a satellite class with the university for 2 hours.

The professor of the first class was Professor Hideki, Huchinoue of Asia Pacific Studies (APS). He teaches “Introduction to Economics”, “Peace Studies”, and  “Research Methods for International Relations” and his research is about “post-conflict peace building and post-disaster resilience building”. This time he taught us from the perspective of economics.

Lesson content :

3rd and 4th period on the 28th of August
Professor Huchinoue taught us the basics of economics. It was the first time for our students to learn economics. They were nervous at first but soon they proved unfounded because economics is an academy related to our lives. Through Professor Huchinoue’s explanation, our students could revise the preoccupation which is economics is difficult.
In the last half, our students challenged an assignment, titled “The Economical answer is not always suitable ethically. Sometimes economic activity in this society is not suitable ethically. Find one such issue in Asia other than Japan, and explain about it using a model.” Three university students (one of them is a former student of our school and another one is foreign student) from Professor Huchinoue’s seminar of APU supported our students.

3rd and 4th period on the 11th of September
The time was coming for our students to make a presentation. Our 25 students were divided into 8 groups and each group made a presentation for five minutes. They practiced for this presentation not only during 4 classes but also after school so they could make a better performance.

Issues presented by our students :

The Opium war ― Price increase of Opium and increase of Opium addicts
Iraq war ― Price increase of petroleum and the pursuit of big power’s interests
Sightseeing facilities in China ― Increase of tourists and environmental damage
Beijing Olympics ― Price increase of real estate, unjust price, and ejection
Buying and selling of fake products
Iskandar plan ― Tourism development in Malaysia and related issues
Price fluctuation and related issues in Myanmar
Vaccine ― Intention of manufacturing enterprise and unjust price

Our students realized economics is related to our life and altered their perspectives towards economics through these classes. They found a problem by themselves and felt how difficult it is to do it. They also realized when they become a university student, they will come across problems, research about it, find a way to solve it, and then find a problem again. They became conscious of how they study at university.
