On October 2nd, Koreshige Anami from the Japan Foundation China Center visited our school and lectured. Mr. Anami’s history includes being both Special Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China and Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Asia). His lecture focused on what he learned through his own experience and understanding multiculturalism, especially related to China and North Korea. He offered advice for how we can make use of his experience in our every-day lives. In addition, he taught us what would be necessary for us to live in a diverse society.

I had much interest in Mr. Anami’s lecture because of his personal history and experience. Personally, I have interest in studying abroad, and upon attending his lecture, my interest was reinforced. I learned that living in a country with diverse people, languages, and opinions can impact our lives. I want to read a lot of great books like Mr. Anami suggested in order to gain not global, but universal perspective and understand different cultures. I want to live in a more diverse, international society after refining my knowledge about Japanese history through reading.

I was able to learn about important information which is needed to live in a diverse world and how to enrich my life. It was unexpected to hear that “Localism” is just as important as “Globalism” when we are always told that we need to be more global. Also, I was left with a strong impression that we have to surpass the idea of “global perspective” and have a “universal perspective” instead.

Mr. Anami taught me a valuable lesson by using his own experience, such as making my own path and think deeply. I also learned I should read a lot of books and experience new things to widen my perspective. I plan to make best of what I learned from his lecture in my own life.
